A third-year design student studying BA (Hons) Design for Art Direction at the London College of Communication campus of University of the Arts London.
These are a collection of montages that I created in response to the highly evident contrast between the glamour and staged editorial images of fashion compared to images of people experiencing crises. With the juxtaposition of the images used in these collages, the audience is able to visualise the perceived privileged lifestyle of those in developed countries despite the harsh realities currently occurring in the developing ones.
During the exploration of different sociopolitical themes of the design industry through various essays, the one I was assigned was Paola De Martin’s essay ‘Breaking Class: Upward Social Climbers’ in her essay anthology titled Give Us A Break! and we were essentially tasked to create a publication with engaging visual communication alongside her essay. In this case, I created a piece of work that stood upright like a desk calendar to lightly gesture towards the significance of calendars for the working class: managing time and having it being easily noticeable to act as a reminder for the divide in social class within the design industry instead of a reminder for work and/or personal events.
